about Juliane @ My Kitchen Counter

California grown, organically raised, seasoned in Italy, matured in New York, currently cooking in London.

Hi! My name is Juliane and I am here to talk to you about food. I am here to inspire you to get in the kitchen and start cooking! I am here to get you to notice where your food is coming from and why you are putting it in your mouth. I firmly believe that if we embark on understanding the infinite issues at play when we make food choices, we will live fuller lives. Cooking and eating is a cultural experience. It is a biological experience. It is a romantic experience.

A little more about my background. I was born and raised in Southern California. I have always had a passion for food, emphasized by my experiences traveling and living abroad. The kitchen table was an important space in my household growing up. When I was thirteen my brother was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a childhood bone cancer, and in support of his wellness, my family adopted a macrobiotic diet. In that moment the kitchen became a space for healing. When I went to college a few years later I gained weight like so many freshman do, when the dining hall becomes a space for indulging. Upon my return home, the kitchen became a space for learning. It was that summer that I took my health and my body and my choices into my own hands. I then went to live in Italy and the kitchen became a space for enjoying.  My kitchen today is a conglomeration of all of those things: a space for healing, a space for indulging, a space for learning and a space for enjoying. My kitchen is a space for educating. It is a space for gathering, a space for nurturing.

In a more formal sense, I have a BA in American Studies from Stanford. I formally learned to cook in Italy. I formally studied health at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York, and I am a licensed Health Coach. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, thoughts or ideas at mykitchncounter@gmail.com.
